The Little Duckling Finds His Place - A Bedtime Story

3 min read ・ Age 3

Once upon a time, in a cozy little pond, lived a mama duck and her fluffy yellow ducklings. But one little duckling was… different. He wasn’t bright yellow like his brothers and sisters. He was a bit gray and clumsy, and his quack sounded a little wobbly. The other ducklings sometimes teased him, calling him ‘Gray’ and leaving him out of their games.

The little gray duckling felt very sad. He tried to play like the others, but he wasn’t very good at splashing or diving. He wished he could be just like them. He wandered away from the pond, hoping to find somewhere he *did* fit in. He met some chickens, but they clucked and said he was too clumsy for their pecking games. He tried to join the geese, but they honked that he didn’t fly with enough grace.

Poor little duckling! He felt more alone than ever. He hid in the tall reeds by the pond, wishing he could disappear. An old, kind turtle saw him hiding. She slowly swam over and said, “Why the long face, little one?” The duckling explained how different he felt and how no one wanted to play with him.

The turtle smiled gently. “Being different isn’t bad, little duckling. It just means you’re special! Sometimes, it takes time to find where you truly belong.” She told him stories of all sorts of wonderful creatures, each unique and perfect in their own way. She reminded him that kindness is always important, even when others aren't kind back.

As the seasons changed, the little gray duckling grew bigger. He started to look… different again! His feathers weren’t gray anymore. They were long and white, and he had a strong, graceful neck. He wasn’t a clumsy duckling at all – he was a beautiful swan!

One day, a flock of swans flew over the pond. The little swan spread his wings and soared into the sky with them! He wasn’t a duckling anymore. He had found his family, and they welcomed him with open wings. He realized that being different wasn’t something to be sad about; it was what made him special and allowed him to find his true home.

From that day on, the swan remembered the kind turtle’s words and always treated everyone with kindness, no matter how different they seemed. He knew that everyone deserves to feel like they belong. Now close your eyes, little one, and remember that *you* are special just the way you are.
