Peter Rabbit was a very curious bunny. He loved to explore! His mother always told him, “Peter, stay close to the garden path. It’s not safe to wander into Mr. McGregor’s garden!” But Peter often thought his adventures were much more fun than listening.
One sunny afternoon, Peter’s mother was busy hanging laundry. “Peter, please stay here,” she said. “I need to finish this quickly.” Peter promised he would, but as soon as his mother turned her back, he hopped, skipped, and jumped right into Mr. McGregor’s garden!
Oh, what a wonderful place! There were rows and rows of bright red strawberries, juicy lettuces, and crunchy carrots. Peter nibbled and munched, forgetting all about his mother’s warning. He ate so much his tummy began to feel round and wobbly.
Suddenly, Peter heard a loud noise! *Clomp, clomp, clomp!* It was Mr. McGregor! Peter quickly tried to hide under a big cabbage leaf, but Mr. McGregor spotted his fluffy tail. Peter was very scared!
Mr. McGregor chased Peter all around the garden. Peter squeezed under a gate, lost one of his little blue shoes, and barely escaped! He ran as fast as his little legs could carry him, back towards his mother.
When Peter finally reached home, he was tired, scared, and missing a shoe. His mother rushed to him and gave him a big hug. “Peter!” she said gently. “You must always listen to me. It’s for your own safety.”
Peter felt very sorry. He told his mother all about his adventure and how frightened he had been. His mother gave him some chamomile tea and tucked him into bed. “Being safe is the best adventure of all,” she whispered.
Peter snuggled close to his mother. He realized that listening wasn’t about missing out on fun; it was about staying safe and making his mother happy. From that day on, Peter Rabbit always listened to his mother, and he had many wonderful, *safe* adventures with her in the garden.
