Ollie the Octopus and the Lost Colors of Coral Reef

« Back to Topic

3 min read ・ Age 8

Ollie the octopus lived in a beautiful coral reef, but lately, something was wrong. The reef wasn’t as bright and colorful as it used to be. The pinks were fading, the yellows were dull, and even the sparkly blues seemed a little gray. Ollie loved his home, and it made him sad to see it losing its sparkle. He wiggled his eight arms, thinking hard about what could be happening.

Old Man Tiber, a wise sea turtle, noticed Ollie’s worried face. “What troubles you, little one?” he asked gently. Ollie explained about the fading colors. Old Man Tiber sighed. “The colors of the reef are tied to the happiness of its creatures. When someone is sad or needs help, the reef loses a little of its glow.”

Ollie’s tentacles perked up. “So, if we help others, the colors will come back?” Old Man Tiber nodded. “That’s the way of the reef. But finding out *who* needs help can be tricky.” Ollie decided he would be a helper octopus! He zoomed off, determined to find someone who needed cheering up.

First, he found Shelly the seahorse, looking glum. “What’s wrong, Shelly?” Ollie asked. “I… I lost my favorite shell,” Shelly sniffled. “It was a beautiful spiral one, and I used it to collect tiny bubbles.” Ollie used his strong tentacles to carefully search among the coral. It took a while, but finally, he spotted it, tucked under a large sea anemone! Shelly was overjoyed. As she happily collected bubbles, a small patch of pink coral nearby brightened.

Next, Ollie saw Finley the fish struggling to build a new home. His little pebbles kept tumbling down. Ollie quickly used two of his arms to hold the pebbles in place while Finley carefully stacked them. Soon, Finley had a sturdy, cozy home. A section of yellow coral began to glow with renewed brightness.

Ollie continued his helpful journey. He untangled Marina the mermaid’s seaweed hair, helped Barnaby the crab find his missing claw (it had just fallen off for a new one to grow!), and even retrieved a lost starfish for Stella. With each act of kindness, a little more color returned to the reef.

Finally, Ollie swam back to Old Man Tiber. The reef was almost back to its original splendor! The pinks were vibrant, the yellows shone, and the blues sparkled. “Look, Old Man Tiber!” Ollie exclaimed. “It worked! Helping others brought the colors back!”

Old Man Tiber smiled. “Indeed, Ollie. You showed everyone that even a small octopus can make a big difference. The reef thrives when we all help each other.” Ollie wiggled all eight arms with joy. He learned that the best way to brighten his own world was to brighten the worlds of others. And as the reef glowed around him, Ollie knew he would always be a helper octopus.

As the sun set, casting a gentle glow over the reef, Ollie curled up in his cozy den, feeling warm and happy. He closed his eyes, dreaming of all the ways he could continue to spread kindness and color throughout his beautiful home. And the reef, filled with joy, shimmered and sparkled, a testament to the power of a helpful heart.
