Barnaby was a little horse with a very big heart. He lived on a sunny farm with his mama and papa, and all his friends – the fluffy sheep, the clucky chickens, and the playful goats. But Barnaby had a secret worry. He was afraid of the dark!
Every evening, as the sun began to set, Barnaby would start to tremble. The shadows looked like funny shapes, and every little sound seemed extra loud. He didn’t want to go to his cozy stable because it felt so dark and mysterious.
One night, the sun dipped down especially quickly. Barnaby’s mama told him it was time for bed. “But Mama,” Barnaby whined, “I’m scared! What if there are monsters in the dark?” Mama Horse nuzzled him gently. “There are no monsters, Barnaby. Just shadows playing tricks on your eyes. But if you’re feeling scared, you can always ask for help.”
Barnaby slowly walked towards his stable, his legs feeling wobbly. He peeked inside. It *was* dark! He wanted to run back to his mama, but he remembered her words: ‘Ask for help.’ He called out, “Papa? Mama? I’m scared!”
Immediately, Papa Horse trotted over and stood at the stable door. He didn’t turn on a bright light, but he left the barn door open a little, letting in a soft glow from the moon. “See, Barnaby?” Papa Horse said. “The dark isn’t so scary when you can see a little bit. And I’m right here.”
Barnaby looked around. The shadows didn’t seem so frightening anymore. He could see his favorite toys and the soft hay in his stall. He felt a little braver. His friend, Rosie the sheep, poked her head into the stable. “Want me to stay with you for a bit, Barnaby?” she offered.
Barnaby smiled. “Yes, please, Rosie!” Rosie snuggled close, and Barnaby felt safe and warm. He realized that being brave didn’t mean not being scared; it meant asking for help when you needed it. And having a friend nearby made everything better.
Soon, Barnaby was feeling sleepy. He yawned a big horse yawn. “Thank you, Papa and Rosie,” he mumbled. “I’m not so scared anymore.” Papa Horse gave him a goodnight kiss, and Rosie promised to check on him later. Barnaby closed his eyes, feeling happy and brave. He knew that even in the dark, he wasn’t alone. And that’s the best feeling of all.
Now close *your* eyes, little one, and remember Barnaby. Even when you feel a little scared, remember to be brave and ask for help. Sweet dreams!
