Barnaby the Brave: A Bedtime Story About Being Yourself

« Back to Topic

Barnaby was a very small dog, even for a puppy. He wasn’t fluffy like the Samoyeds, or speedy like the Greyhounds, or strong like the Saint Bernards. Barnaby was… well, Barnaby. He had short, speckled fur, floppy ears that didn’t quite match, and a tail that wagged so hard his whole body wiggled. He worried he wasn’t a *proper* dog.

Every day, Barnaby tried to be like the other dogs. He tried to run fast, but he tripped over his paws. He tried to bark loudly, but it came out as a squeak. He even tried to fluff his fur, which just made it messier. The other puppies didn’t mean to be unkind, but they’d giggle, and Barnaby would feel his ears droop.

One evening, Old Man Tiber, the wisest dog in the park, noticed Barnaby looking sad. Tiber was a big, grey dog with kind eyes. He lumbered over and sat beside Barnaby. “What troubles you, little one?” he asked gently.

Barnaby explained how he wished he could be like the other dogs. “I’m just… different,” he whimpered. Tiber chuckled, a warm, rumbling sound. “Different is good, Barnaby! Different is what makes you *you*. And sometimes, being different is exactly what’s needed.”

Just then, a little girl named Lily ran into the park, crying. She’d lost her favorite teddy bear, Mr. Snuggles. The bigger dogs barked and ran around, trying to help, but they were too big and clumsy to search under the bushes. Barnaby, being small, could easily slip under the leaves.

Without a second thought, Barnaby wriggled under the bushes, sniffing and searching. His little nose twitched, and soon he spotted Mr. Snuggles, tucked between the roots of a tree! He carefully nudged the bear out and brought it back to Lily.

Lily’s face lit up. “Mr. Snuggles!” she cried, hugging Barnaby tightly. “You found him! You’re a hero!” The other puppies wagged their tails and barked with excitement. They realized Barnaby’s small size wasn’t a weakness, but a strength.

Barnaby’s tail wagged so hard he almost lifted off the ground. He wasn’t like the other dogs, and that was okay. He was brave, he was helpful, and he was perfectly Barnaby. Old Man Tiber smiled. “See?” he said. “Bravery isn’t about being big or strong. It’s about using what *you* have to help others.”

From that day on, Barnaby didn’t try to be anyone but himself. He played with the other puppies, but he also used his small size to help find lost toys and comfort sad children. He learned that being different wasn’t something to be ashamed of, but something to celebrate. And as he drifted off to sleep that night, Barnaby knew he was a very proper dog indeed – a proper, brave, and wonderfully unique dog.
