Barnaby Bunny's Big Dream: A Bedtime Story

« Back to Topic

3 min read ・ Age 6

Barnaby Bunny was a small bunny with very big dreams. He didn’t want to just hop and nibble carrots like the other bunnies. Barnaby wanted to be a star! Every night, he’d watch the fireflies twinkle and imagine himself shining just as brightly. But Barnaby was shy, and he worried he wasn’t good at anything special.

One day, Old Man Tiber, the wisest rabbit in the meadow, announced a talent show. All the bunnies were excited! Some could wiggle their noses extra fast, others could dig the most amazing burrows. Barnaby wanted to enter, but he didn’t know what his talent was. He tried wiggling his nose, but it just tickled. He tried digging, but he mostly just made a mess.

He sat under the willow tree, feeling very glum. His friend, Pipkin, hopped over. “What’s wrong, Barnaby?” she asked. Barnaby explained his dream and how he couldn’t find a talent. Pipkin smiled. “Everyone has a talent, Barnaby! You just have to find yours. And sometimes, it’s okay to try lots of things before you do.”

Pipkin suggested Barnaby try singing. Barnaby’s ears drooped. “Singing? Oh, Pipkin, I can’t sing! I sound like a squeaky carrot!” But Pipkin insisted. She encouraged him to hum a little tune, then to add words. At first, it *did* sound a bit squeaky, but Pipkin cheered him on.

Barnaby practiced every day. He sang to the flowers, he sang to the butterflies, and he even sang to Old Man Tiber. Slowly, his voice grew stronger and clearer. He wasn’t just squeaking anymore; he was making beautiful music! He wrote a song about believing in yourself, even when things are hard.

Finally, the night of the talent show arrived. Barnaby was so nervous his whiskers trembled. He watched as the other bunnies performed their amazing tricks. When Old Man Tiber called his name, Barnaby took a deep breath and hopped onto the stage. He closed his eyes and began to sing.

His voice filled the meadow. The other bunnies stopped what they were doing and listened. They tapped their feet and swayed to the music. When he finished, the meadow erupted in applause! Barnaby had done it! He wasn’t just a small bunny with big dreams anymore; he was Barnaby, the singing bunny, and he had shone brighter than any firefly.

Barnaby didn’t win first prize, but he didn’t mind. He had discovered his talent, and he had learned that even if you’re shy, you can still share your gifts with the world. And as he snuggled into his burrow that night, Barnaby knew that the best kind of star wasn’t the brightest, but the one that dared to shine.
