Lily and Rose were sisters, but sometimes, it didn’t feel like it. Lily loved to paint, swirling bright colors onto paper, creating magical worlds. Rose loved to build, stacking blocks into towering castles and winding roads. They both loved bedtime stories, but they *never* agreed on which one to hear.
Every night, the same thing would happen. “The story about the sparkly unicorn!” Lily would plead. “No, the story about the brave knight!” Rose would insist. Their voices would get louder and louder, until their mama would sigh and say, “Girls, please! You’re making bedtime a battle, not a cozy time.”
One evening, Lily started painting a picture of a beautiful garden. Rose, meanwhile, was building a magnificent castle, right next to Lily’s painting. But Rose’s castle was *so* big, it cast a shadow over Lily’s garden, making the colors look dull. “Rose!” Lily cried. “Your castle is ruining my painting!”
Rose frowned. “It’s not ruining it! It’s protecting it from the grumpy cloud monsters!” she said stubbornly. “And your garden is too bright! It’s distracting my knight!” They argued and argued, their voices rising again. Lily accidentally knocked over a tower of Rose’s blocks, and Rose splashed a bit of water onto Lily’s painting.
Suddenly, they both stopped. They looked at the mess – the fallen blocks, the smudged paint – and then at each other. Tears welled up in Lily’s eyes. Rose’s lip trembled. Mama came in and knelt beside them. “What happened, sweethearts?” she asked gently.
“We… we fought,” Lily whispered. “And now everything is ruined.” Rose nodded sadly. Mama smiled. “Nothing is ruined. Sometimes, when we’re working together, we need to remember to be kind and think about how our actions affect others. Lily, Rose’s castle wasn’t trying to ruin your painting, she was trying to protect it in her own way. And Rose, Lily didn’t mean to knock over your blocks.”
Lily and Rose looked at each other with new eyes. “I’m sorry I splashed water on your painting,” Rose said quietly. “And I’m sorry I knocked over your castle,” Lily replied. They started to clean up the mess together. Lily carefully rebuilt the tower, and Rose gently blotted the paint.
When everything was tidy, they sat side-by-side. “Maybe… maybe we can combine our stories tonight?” Lily suggested. Rose’s face lit up. “Yes! The brave knight can visit the sparkly unicorn’s garden!” And so, Mama told a wonderful story about a brave knight who befriended a sparkly unicorn in a beautiful garden, a story made even more special because it was created with kindness and cooperation.
As Lily and Rose drifted off to sleep, they held hands. They realized that even though they were different, their sisterly love was the most magical thing of all. And that, they knew, would always shine brighter than any castle or garden.
