Zola the Zebra Learns to Love Her Stripes - Bedtime Story

« Back to Topic

3 min read ・ Age 8

Zola the zebra lived on the sunny African savanna. She loved to play with her friends – Gira the giraffe, Leo the lion cub, and Penny the penguin (who was visiting from a very, very far away place!). But Zola had a secret. She didn’t like her stripes. “They’re just…too much!” she’d sigh, looking at her reflection in the watering hole. “Everyone else is just *one* color. Gira is all golden, Leo is a lovely tawny brown, and even Penny is neatly black and white.”

One day, the animals decided to have a talent show. Gira practiced stretching her long neck to reach the highest leaves, Leo practiced his mighty (but gentle!) roar, and Penny practiced sliding on her belly. Zola wanted to participate, but she didn’t think she had a talent. “What can *I* do?” she wondered. “I just…have stripes.” She tried to hide them, rolling in the red dust, but it only made her look patchy and uncomfortable.

Leo noticed Zola looking sad. “What’s wrong, Zola?” he asked kindly. Zola explained how she wished she didn’t have stripes. Leo tilted his head. “But Zola,” he said, “your stripes are amazing! They’re like a beautiful, swirling pattern. They make you *you*!”

Gira added, “And they help you camouflage in the tall grasses! It’s a very useful talent, actually.” Penny waddled closer. “Back where I come from, everyone looks pretty similar. It’s nice to see someone so…distinctive! Your stripes are wonderful.”

Zola still felt a little unsure. “But what if everyone laughs?” she whispered. Penny smiled. “True friends won’t laugh *at* you, Zola, they’ll laugh *with* you! And even if someone does, their opinion doesn’t change how special you are.”

Suddenly, Zola had an idea. For the talent show, she wouldn’t try to *hide* her stripes, she would *celebrate* them! She practiced a special dance, swirling and twirling to show off her unique pattern. She even invited Gira, Leo, and Penny to join her, creating a dazzling display of colors and movement.

At the talent show, Zola was a little nervous, but when she started to dance, she felt a surge of confidence. The other animals cheered and clapped, amazed by her graceful moves and beautiful stripes. Even the older zebras nodded with pride. Zola realized that her stripes weren’t something to be ashamed of; they were something to be celebrated!

After the show, Zola felt happier than she ever had before. She learned that being different wasn’t a bad thing, it was what made her special. She continued to play with her friends, loving her stripes and knowing that true friends love you for who you are, stripes and all. And as the sun set over the savanna, Zola drifted off to sleep, dreaming of swirling stripes and happy dances.
